The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
