The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
